DeCosta, Boulos honored by C Club

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Eric DeCosta '93 and Joe Boulos '68, two of Colby College's most prominent graduates, were honored Friday at the 114th Annual C Club Dinner at the Page Commons Room in Cotter Union.

DeCosta earned The Carl E. Nelson Sports Achievement Award for achievement in the athletic world. Boulos was honored with the C Club Person of the Year Award, presented annually to a member (or members) of the Colby family, not necessarily alumni, who have shown dedication and support to Colby athletics by their service to the College and particularly to athletics.

"The C Club did a tremendous job selecting this year's award recipients," said Jake Olkkola, Colby's Harold Alfond Director of Athletics.

DeCosta (pictured right) is the assistant general manager of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens and a former Colby football player.

DeCosta, fresh off the Ravens taking a 40-0 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night, flew to Maine with his family on Friday morning and had a busy day. He met with Colby's coaching staff for about 45 minutes in the afternoon and then spoke with Colby's football team.

"Eric is one of the top minds in the NFL," Olkkola said. "His commitment to his family, community, and profession made him an excellent choice for this year's Carl E. Nelson Athletic Achievement Award."

Former Colby football coach Tom Austin, DeCosta's head coach during his playing days with the Mules, was in attendance at Friday night's dinner. On Saturday, DeCosta did the coin flip before Colby's game with Bates College.

DeCosta played linebacker for the Mules, was co-captain his senior year, and was selected as the Millett Award recipient for top male athlete during his four years at Colby.

DeCosta started with an entry level position with the Ravens in 1996 and quickly moved up the ranks as an area scout, director of scouting, and director of player personnel. DeCosta has turned down offers for general manager interviews to remain with the Ravens and is expected to take over from current general manager Ozzie Newsome when he retires.

Boulos (pictured left) is not only a graduate, but one of the most loyal supporters of the College. He is a life trustee and a former chair of Colby's Board of Trustees. Boulos and his wife, Sheri, recently committed $10 million - the largest gift in their history - for the College's new athletics complex, which is slated to open in 2020.

"For Joe to be selected as the C Club Person of the Year was a perfect fit," Olkkola said. "The Boulos family's passion and commitment to Colby and Colby athletics has been truly remarkable."

Raised in Portland and South Portland, and well known in Maine’s business community, Boulos was a U.S. Marine pilot in Vietnam before founding CBRE | Boulos Brokerage, Asset Management and Boulos Development in 1975. He now oversees the strategic direction of the management company. Over his career, Boulos has developed and built more than 2.5 million square feet of commercial property in the Portland area.

Boulos became a Colby overseer in 1991. He joined the Board of Trustees two years later and served as chair from 2005 to 2009, during which time the College conducted a $376-million campaign—the largest in Maine history when it surpassed its goal in 2010.

The Bouloses’ generous support of the College has been marked by support of the existing Boulos Family Fitness Center as well as the Harold Alfond Stadium and the Colby College Museum of Art. They have contributed significantly to financial aid at Colby and beyond. They created the Boulos Family Scholarship program that has, to date, funded 310 Maine veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11 with scholarships of $10,000 each.
