Women's rugby back in playoffs for third straight year

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's rugby club team advanced to the USA Rugby Division II Fall Tournament for the third consecutive year and start playoff action this Saturday.
The Mules play at Fairfield University in the opening round of the tourney. The Stags are the second seed from the Tri-State Conference. With a victory, Colby would play the Syracuse University/U.S. Coast Guard Academy winner in a round of 16 game at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 17.
With the loss of a fine senior class in May, Colby started the season at 1-2. However, the Mules have won four straight games heading into Saturday.
"We were fortunate after falling to 1-2 to have a bye weekend to redefine our team and figure out our new identity," Colby head coach Susan Childers said. "We came back strong and gained confidence by winning the next four games."
Colby started the winning streak by defeating then conference leader Stonehill College. The Mules also had victories over University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Roger Williams University, and Saint Anselm College. Colby had a 235-7 scoring advantage during the winning streak.
Senior captains Ella Maddi and Maura Campbell lead Colby (5-2 overall), which finished second in the Rugby Northeast standings. The captains are two of six seniors on the team.
The Mules, who finished seventh in the country, made it to the second round of the tourney last year before falling to championship runner-up Vassar.
