Hust, Schoepke, Ferri lead alpine ski teams in season opener

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Rosie Hust and Sandy Schoepke both finished in the top 10 for the Colby College women and Paul Ferri had a fine debut for the men in the slalom at the season-opening St. Lawrence University Carnival at Whiteface Mountain on Friday.
 
Hust, who skied at the NCAA Division I Championships last year, had times of 46.04 and 51.47 to place sixth overall. Meanwhile, Schoepke had a 1:39.15 total on runs of 47.52 and 51.63 to take 10th.
 
The Colby women had 87 points to place fourth overall and first among New England Small College Athletic Conference schools.
 
Lily Hogan placed 22nd for the women with a 1:41.65 (49.64,52.01) and first-year Rylee McCormack had a top-30 finish in her Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) debut by taking 28th in 1:45.87 (51.01, 54.86).
 
Ferri finished with runs of 49.11 and 47.96 for a two-run total of 1:37.07 to lead four Colby men's skiers in the top 25.
 
Matt Wilson was 18th for Colby in 1:37.58 (48.89, 48.69), Colbey Derwin finished 24th with a 1:38.78 (49.36, 49.42), and Ellis Grubman (pictured) had runs of 50.56 and 49.42 for a 1:39.32 finish.
 
Colby will compete in the giant slalom Saturday.
