WATERVILLE, Maine -- Despite a 10-6 hit advantage, the Colby College baseball team fell 6-4 to Husson University in non-conference play Tuesday night.
Husson improves to 16-12 overall, while the Mules drop to 7-17.
Andrew Della Volpe finished with three hits, one run, and an RBI for Colby. Ben Coleman (pictured) added two hits and one run. Matt Garcia hit his first home run of the season.
Smith gave up eight hits over five innings, but struck out six and walked none. Nick Guerrette pitched the final two innings for his third save of the season, allowing no hits and striking out two. Jesse Colford pitched 1.1 innings, did not allow a hit, and also struck out two.
With one out in the second, Christian Cornell was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Chapman's single. The runners moved over a base on a Matthew Smith ground out. On an unusual play, Mule starter Bobby Forese had a ball in the dirt that catcher Della Volpe blocked and dribbled about eight yards to his left. Della Volpe tried to make a quick flip throw to Forese to get Cornell coming in from third base, but the ball got past him and went up the first base line. That allowed Chapman to score all the way from second on a headfirst slide.
Coleman helped Colby tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning. He had a one-out single, stole second base, and then took third on a balk. Matt Treveloni, the leading hitter on the Mules, singled to bring in Coleman.
After a pitching change, Rebar stole second base and Sam Huston walked to load the bases. Cornell followed with another walk to force in Wong from third. Chapman singled to bring in Reber with the other run.
The Mules bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back in the game. Keenan Iuliano doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Della Volpe's double. Della Volpe tagged and took third based on a long fly out to center field. William Wessman brought in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
