Field hockey falls in home finale

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Meredith Keenan scored for the Colby College field hockey team, but Hamilton College remained hot with a 4-1 NESCAC victory Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Hamilton scored twice in each half to win for the 10th time this season. The Continentals (10-4 overall, 7-3 NESCAC) came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the country. Hamilton has knocked off Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Amherst.

Colby is still alive for the eighth and final NESCAC playoff spot. The Mules (6-8, 2-7 NESCAC) play at Bates College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Bobcats are 3-6 in the league and Connecticut College is 2-7. If the Mules beat Bates and Connecticut College defeats Wesleyan, there would be a three-way tie at 3-7 for the final spot.

Colby seniors Tori Brown, McKayla Blanch, Caroline Ferguson, Hannah Hearn, and Kaleigh Hoffman were honored before the game.

The Continentals led 3-0 at halftime and all three goals came in the opening 25 minutes. Michaela Giuttari scored at 8:27 when she stuffed in her own rebound after goalkeeper Riley Whitmyer made a nice stop. The play started off a long pass from Lizzie Clarke.

Giuttari had some nice stick work on the second goal as she pushed past a Colby defender in the area and found Tatiana Bradley near the right post for the one-timer goal.

Emma Anderson made it 3-0 at 24:05 of the first half. After taking a penalty corner, Anderson stepped back out on the field and tipped in a shot by Lizzie Clarke.

Bradley had an assist on Hamilton's fourth goal by Margaret Revera on another penalty corner at 63:34. Bradley pushed the pass to Revera on the near side and she smacked a long shot for the score.

Keenan scored the lone goal for Colby with 5:39 to play. Hamilton failed to clear a ball and Keenan ripped a shot from just inside the circle.

Julia Booth stopped six shots for the Continentals, while Riley Whitmyer made 18 saves. Hamilton had a 33-16 margin in shots and a 13-5 edge in penalty corners.
