Field hockey blanks Wesleyan for key NESCAC victory

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College field hockey team had a 10-0 shot advantage in the second half and scored three goals in a span of 5:34 to pull away for a 4-0 win over Wesleyan University on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

The Mules move to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the league heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. non-conference home game with Endicott College on Family Homecoming Weekend at Colby.

Wesleyan (2-8, 0-5 NESCAC) had a 7-6 shot advantage and a 5-3 penalty corner margin in the first half, but the Mules led 1-0 at the break. Anna Rudinski scored her first of the season when she rifled in a quick shot from the right side after Kat Restrepo's pass was tipped slightly by Kate Burkett.

Merrill Reed gave the Mules some breathing room with her fifth goal of the year on a backhand shot in front of the net. McKayla Blanch fed her the pass and she twisted to her right for the score at 50:13.

Blanch scored just 30 seconds later for a 3-0 margin. Hannah Hearn dribbled up the field and found Blanch, who got some space and scored to the right corner of the cage.

Meredith Keenan closed out the scoring at 55:47. Kallie Hutchinson passed it to Keenan near the left post and she quickly turned and fired in a shot.

Colby goalkeeper Emily Buckman had to make just one save to earn her first collegiate shutout. Claire Edelman stopped six shots for the Cardinals.

Abby Warren had all seven of Wesleyan's shots.
