Field hockey beats Williams

Tori Brown WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Tori Brown saved her first collegiate goal for just the right time and first-year goalkeeper Emily Buckman earned her first collegiate victory to help Colby College to a thrilling 2-1 win over 23rd-ranked Williams College on Saturday.

The Mules (2-2 overall, 1-1 NESCAC) beat Williams at home in the 2013 season, but the Ephs have a 21-4 lead in the series after Saturday's game. Colby also has some momentum heading into Tuesday's 7 p.m. home game with top-ranked Bowdoin College on Bill Alfond Field.
"Playing at Williams on their FieldTurf was a grudge match and we were very proud of the effort and hustle of our team," Colby head coach Kelly Terwilliger said.

Colby's defense in front of Buckman was superb. Kat Restrepo had two defensive saves and the back line had to overcome intense pressure by Williams. The Ephs (2-2, 1-1) were 0-for-18 on penalty corners and had a 22-6 shot advantage. Terwilliger also singled out Kate Burkett and first-year Elisa Mell for their defensive play.

The Mules had four shots in the second half and scored twice. The first came off a penalty corner with 13:48 left in the game. Anna Rudinski took the corner and Kallie Hutchinson had her second goal of the season.

Brown, a defender in her first three years, was moved to the midfield by Terwilliger. She scored unassisted just 3:01 after Hutchinson's goal.

The Ephs swamped Colby's end over the final 10 minutes of the game, but the defense would not break.

The lone goal for Williams came off a penalty stroke just 2:23 into the second half. Buckman did guess the right way on the stroke, but Hannah Goodrick placed her shot perfectly in the left corner of the cage.
The Ephs had nine penalty corners in each half and had a 13-2 shot advantage in the opening 35 minutes. However, Colby showed it came to play and kept the game scoreless at the break.
"Our defense played together and tough," Terwilliger said. "Emily showed confidence and leadership in the cage."
