Terwilliger wins in field hockey coaching debut

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Merrill Read (Milwaukee, Wis.) and McKayla Blanch (Tewksbury, Mass.) both had two goals to lead the Colby College field hockey team to a season-opening 6-1 win over Thomas College on Wednesday at Bill Alfond Field.

Colby head coach Kelly Terwilliger was a winner in her coaching debut. The Ohio State graduate and her team will play host to ninth-ranked Tufts University on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Mules (1-0 overall) had a 34-3 shot advantage, including a 23-0 margin in the opening half. Thomas goalkeeper Abbie Charrier (Waldo, Maine) did play well with 15 saves, and the Terriers only trailed 2-0 at intermission.
Read scored her first collegiate goal at 9:55 of the opening half when she poked in a rebound. The Mules made it 2-0 when Blanch had a nice individual effort on the right side and came in alone on Charrier for the score.
Colby took advantage of a Thomas turnover when Caroline Ferguson (Weston, Mass.) scored at 5:17 of the second half. Ferguson was there on the turnover and blasted in a shot from about 10 yards.
Ferguson's goal was important because Thomas (2-2 overall) cut the lead to 3-1 off a penalty corner. Gabby Martell (Gorham, Maine) took the corner, stepped back out on the field, and scored when she received a pass from Tiffany Weeks (Kennebunk, Maine) at 12:02 of the half.
Meredith Keenan put the Mules back up by three goals less than four minutes later when she rammed in a shot off a cross that had been pushed away by Charrier.
Read scored her second of the day off a penalty corner from Hannah Hearn (Auburn, Maine). Read took the quick pass from Hearn and her score made it 5-1. Blanch closed out the scoring with 5:11 to play.
Riley Whitmyer (Bentleyville, Ohio) had two saves. All three of the Terriers' shots were on goal.
