Smith named new assistant field hockey coach for Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Leslie Smith, an assistant coach on Middlebury College's 2017 national championship squad, is the new assistant coach for the Colby College field hockey team.

Smith, who played field hockey and graduated from the University of Michigan, will work under Colby head coach Kelly Terwilliger.
 
"We could not be more thrilled to have Leslie join our staff. Leslie understands what it takes to be successful at the highest level," Terwilliger said. "Her elite level of coaching, insight, and competitiveness will enhance the experience of our student-athletes and add an extra dimension to our coaching staff as we continue our journey towards excellence."
 
Smith also helped the Panthers to the New England Small College Athletic Conference title in 2017. The Middlebury coaching staff was named Division III National and Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
Prior to her collegiate coaching career, Smith taught English in China and worked at a global non-profit organization.
 
A 2015 graduate of Michigan, Smith was a member of two Big Ten championship teams in 2010 and 2011. She earned Big Ten First Team honors in 2014 while leading the Wolverines with a career-best 14 goals. Smith was on the Big Ten Second Team and led Michigan in assists in 2012.
 
Smith was named to the All-Big Ten Academic Team three times and was honored as a Student-Athlete Academic Scholar four times. Smith, who coached USA Futures and a local club team while at Ann Arbor, was selected to speak at Michigan's Student-Athlete Graduation Celebration.
 
A native of Hershey, Pa., Smith was heavily involved in USA Field Hockey. She was a member of the USA Under-16 International Team in 2009.
