Golf team has improved finish

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Colby College golf team began the 2016 season with a solid start by taking eighth place at the Bowdoin College Invitational on Sunday.

 

The Mules were just three shots behind fifth place Husson University, two in back of sixth place Bowdoin College, and one stroke in back of Bates College. Colby finished in 10th place last year and were 35 strokes behind Bates, 17 in back of Husson, and nine behind Bowdoin.

Sam Funderburg, who came to Colby in February of last year, made an immediate impact in his first tournament. He finished in fifth place overall with a score of 150 over the two-day tournament. After shooting a 79 on Saturday, Funderburg earned Sunday medalist honors with a one-under-par 71.
Geoff Sullivan finished in 22nd place with a consistent two-day total of 158. He tied with Funderburg on Saturday with a 79 and added another 79 Sunday.
Michael Broucek had an 82 both days for a 164 total in taking 34th place. Andrew Beacham finished with a 171 total, including an 82 on Sunday.
Saint Anselm College won the invitational with a score of 617, two shots better than Endicott College and University of Southern Maine. Providence College was fourth in 625 and was followed by Husson (633), Bowdoin (634), Bates (635), Colby (636), St. Joseph's College (639), Nichols College (646), and University of Maine at Farmington (674).
