Men's hockey gives tough battle to Trinity in playoff loss

HARTFORD, Conn. — Colby College goaltender Emerson Verrier kept his team in the game with 44 saves in the Mules’ 3-1 loss at second-seeded Trinity College in a NESCAC quarterfinal game Saturday.

Colby ends the season at 9-11-5 overall, while the Bantams (19-5-1) will now host the NESCAC Final Four after eighth-seeded Tufts University stunned top-seeded Williams College in another quarterfinal game.
Verrier stopped 22 shots in the first period when the Bantams put 23 shots on goal to seventh-seeded Colby’s five. The shot totals were closer the rest of the way, with Trinity holding a slight edge at 24-22. Verrier made numerous difficult saves in finishing the season with 730 stops.
The Bantams led 1-0 after the first period on Mark Knowlton’s third goal of the season. Sean Orlando skated behind Colby’s net and found Knowlton in the slot for a one-timer.
Orlando picked up his 15th assist when he found Michael Hawkrigg just inside the blue line for
Trinity’s second goal of the game and a 2-0 margin after 40 minutes.
The Mules were able to get some sustained pressure in Trinity’s zone and fired a few shots on goalie Alex Morin. Jack Burton scored his seventh goal for Colby after pushing in a rebound at 8:16 of the third period. Colin Reilly and Mario Benicky were credited with assists.
Trinity’s third goal at 15:37 came off a turnover near the Mules’ blue line. Orlando pushed a quick pass to Hawkrigg on a two-on-one and got the return pass for his ninth goal of the season. Orlando played a part in all three goals with one goal and two assists.
Colby pulled Verrier with 2:30 left in the game, but could not get a second goal.
