Men's hockey ties Cardinals, 4-4

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team had four leads in the game, only to watch Wesleyan University battle back each time in a 4-4 overtime tie in NESCAC play Saturday at Alfond Rink.

The Mules, who play at University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at 7 p.m., moved to 6-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the conference. The Cardinals are 8-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the league.

Colby took its fourth lead of the game on a spectacular goal. Michael Rudolf (pictured) quickly got the puck to Michael Decker in the Mules' zone. Decker hit a perfect pass to a streaking Thomas Stahlhuth at center ice. Stahlhuth skated over the blue line, split two defenders, and scored his first collegiate goal by beating Wesleyan goalie Dawson Sprigings with just 2:23 left in regulation.

The Cardinals, though, scored just 41 seconds later on Tyler Kobryn's second goal of the season. Mike Yablong pushed a pass to James Kline, who beat a Colby defender and ripped a shot that was saved by Colby goalie Andrew Tucci. The rebound went directly to Kobryn for the score.

Wesleyan had a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal in the overtime session. Tucci made terrific saves on all three shots by Andy Espinoza, Tyler Watt, and Sean Ross.

Tucci had 22 saves and allowed three goals, while Sprigings stopped 29 shots.

The Cardinals had the better of play in the first period, but Colby held a 1-0 lead at intermission. Rudolf passed the puck to Burton, who went to the left corner and managed to get a centering pass to Scott. The puck went off Scott's stick and hit off a Wesleyan defender for his fourth goal of the season.

Wesleyan tied the game at 1-1 when Quincy Oujevolk deflected in a shot from Chad Malinowski at 3:29 of the second period. Jordan Jancze also assisted on the play.

The Mules went up 2-1 on Mario Benicky's third of the year at 17:46 of the second period. JP Schuhlen's centering pass from behind the goal found Benicky for a one-timer. Mark Leprine also had an assist on the goal.

In a similar ending as the third period, Wesleyan struck again just 1:04 later to make it 2-2 after two periods. Malinowski's shot from straight out from the goal deflected off a Colby defender for the score. Kline and Walker Harris had assists on the score.

Wesleyan's second goal came against Colby goalie Sean Lawrence, who played 2:25 after Tucci had to leave the game with a broken skate blade.

The Mules went up again at 3-2 on Rudolf's second of the season from Scott and Leprine just 1:08 into the third period. Scott's shot was saved by Sprigings, but Rudolf collected the rebound in front for the goal.

Wesleyan, again, fought back with another quick goal after the Colby score. The Cardinals won a face-off in their own end and scored on a transition play. Hunter Vannier scored off a tough angle from the right side just 49 seconds after the Mule goal.

Rudolf had a goal and two assists, plus won 14 of his 22 draws. EJ Rauseo was 13--for-16 on face-off attempts for the Mules. Walker Harris led Wesleyan with 12 wins in 22 attempts.
