Men's hockey holds off Panthers

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Colby College men's hockey team opened up a 4-0 lead after two periods and then held off a furious Middlebury College rally in the final 20 minutes to earn a 4-3 NESCAC win Friday night.

The 14th-ranked Mules are 7-4-3 overall and 6-3-2 in conference play, while Middlebury drops to 0-13-2 overall and 0-9-0 in the league. Colby will play at Williams College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Colby swept both games against the Panthers.

Devin Albert (pictured) had a spectacular night with assists on all four Colby goals.

Jack Burton, Colby's leading scorer with five goals and nine assists for 14 points, scored on the power play at 4:15 of the first period. Albert and Phil Klitirinos had assists on the play.

Geoff Sullivan scored his third of the season just 33 seconds into the second period off passes from Albert and Burton. Sullivan is second in scoring with three goals and nine assists for 12 points.

The Mules took advantage of a rare goaltender's interference call to score again on the power play at 3:14. Klitirinos, third in scoring with five goals and six assists, tallied from Sullivan and Albert.

Colby scored its fourth goal of the game with just 1:58 left in the second period. The score turned out to be very important. Michael Rudlof, the NESCAC Player of the Week last week, scored from Albert and Klitirinos.

After a Colby interference call, Middlebury started its comeback with a power play goal at 6:47 from Brendan Dawson.

Mitchell Allen's unassisted goal at 11:17 helped the Panthers cut the Mules' lead in half to 4-2.  After a tripping call on Colby, Middlebury pulled to within one on Trevor Turnbull's power play score at 15:28.

Middlebury pulled its goaltender and had an extra attacker for 1:35. Sean Lawrence stopped 13 of his 27 saves in the opening period. Stephen Klein made 29 stops for the Panthers.
