Sayre earns academic honor

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College graduate Austin Sayre (Summit, N.J.), who scored his 100th career goal during the 2017 season, was named to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Academic Team.

Sayre, who graduated from Colby in May with a degree in economics, was one of 75 senior men's lacrosse players to earn the honor in the three NCAA divisions. Head coaches nominated student-athletes who have excelled both in the classroom and on the field during their lacrosse careers.

Sayre, despite missing half of his junior year due to injury, finished his career with 105 goals and 38 assists for 143 points. He led the Mules this past season with 30 goals and 10 assists for 40 points, including a team-best five man-up scores. He became the seventh player in program history to reach 100 career goals.

Sayre earned All-American honorable mention honors and was on the All-New England Small College Athletic Conference Team after his sophomore season. He was the NESCAC Rookie of the Year.

Forty-two student-athletes from 22 different Division III institutions met the criteria, which required that nominees must have senior standing, a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, and be a significant enough player that he was nominated for at least all-conference selection.
