Chelimo third for men's cross country at NESCAC championship

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After missing last year's New England Small College Athletic Conference championship race, Colby College's David Chelimo finished in third place at the men's cross country league meet Saturday at Quarry Road Trails.

Chelimo had a time of 25 minutes, 33.94 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Tim Nichols of Tufts University won the men's title in 24:58.79 and Jumbo teammate Luke O'Connor placed second in 25:29.80.

Chelimo and the two Tufts runners pulled away early from the pack and were never challenged. James Jones of Bates College finished in fourth place, nearly 30 seconds behind Chelimo. O'Connor and Chelimo were able to stay with Nichols for about half the race, but Nichols steadily pulled away.

While Chelimo will earn All-NESCAC First Team honors for his placing, Colby's Griffin Gagnon (pictured) will be on the second team when the league office officially releases the teams next week. Gagnon took 13th place in 26:22.53 and appeared strong at the finish.

Colby finished in fifth place with a score of 127, but was just one point away from tying for third place with Middlebury College and Tufts. Williams won its fourth straight NESCAC title with a score of 83 and Amherst College took second with 100.

Benard Kibet finished in the top 30 by placing 30th for the Mules in 26:57.08. Nathan Madeira placed 38th for Colby in 27:04.35 and Noel Feeney took 43rd in 27:0 9.73.

Colby's other runners included: Eli Decker (52nd, 27:18.06), Tom O'Shea (53rd, 27:19.81), Reeve Maddux (76th, 27:52.42), Silas Eastman (80th, 27:59.02), Thomas O'Donnell (85th, 28:05.33), Aziz Ghadiali (92nd, 28:16.44), and Gabe Kline (108th, 28:44.63).
