Defending champion Mules place seventh in New England

WATERFORD, Conn. — The defending champion Colby College men’s cross country team, racing without All-American David Chelimo, finished a strong seventh at the New England Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships at Harkness Memorial State Park on Saturday.

The Mules struggled in taking eighth place out of 11 teams at the NESCAC meet, but Colby was ready Saturday and was seventh out of 58 teams. Colby was sixth among NESCAC schools with a 205 score and the Mules beat CBB rivals Bates and Bowdoin.

“Today was great,” Colby head coach Jared Beers said. “The guys didn’t let a tough NESCAC meet get to them and raced really well.”

Colby’s Silas Eastman earned another All-New England honor and will head to the NCAA Division III Championships next Saturday in Winneconne, Wis. The junior finished 11th out of 380 finishers in a time of 25 minutes, 8.3 seconds over the 8-kilometer course.

Griffin Gagnon and Benard Kibet both were close to earning All-New England honors for finishing in the top 35. Gagnon clocked a 25:42.4 to take 38th place and Kibet was with him at the finish line in 39th at 25:42.8.

Stefan Sandreuter took 49th for the Mules in 25:52.3, while Nathan Madeira was 68th in 26:04.3.
