Davis helps Gaetano win first game with women's basketball team

CASTINE, Maine -- Emily Davis had the best game of her collegiate career and new head coach Brittany Gaetano won in her Colby College debut in a 59-44 win over Rensselaer on the opening day of the Mariner Classic at Maine Maritime Academy on Friday night.

The Mules (1-0 overall) will meet the host school at 3 p.m. in the championship game Saturday. Maine Maritime had an easy 91-53 victory against University of Maine at Presque Isle.
 

Davis was 5-for-9 from the field and hit eight of her 12 free throws for a game-high 18 points. She also pulled down 11 rebounds and had two steals.

Haley Driscoll helped out with 12 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists for the Mules. Katie McCrum added seven points, MK Caverly scored five and pulled down five boards, and Paige Russell had five points in her first collegiate game. 
 

The Mules held RPI (1-1) to just 26.7 percent (16-for-60) shooting from the field. Colby had 14 assists on its 20 made field goals and only had 10 turnovers. 

RPI led 13-10 after the first quarter and took a 21-18 lead into halftime. The Mules, though, exploded for 41 points in the second half.
