Women's basketball falls to Monks

STANDISH, Maine -- The Colby College women's basketball team ended the first semester of play with a 5-4 overall record after a 58-47 setback at St. Joseph's College in non-conference play Saturday. 

The Mules were playing their second game in 18 hours after an easy win over Fisher College on Friday night. 
 

Emily Davis (pictured) shot 6-for-9 from the field on the way to a team-high 13 points and four rebounds for the Mules. Katie McCrum added nine points, a team-high nine rebounds, and five assists. Haley Driscoll contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Emily Benway was 11-for-19 from the field for 26 points for the Monks (7-1 overall). Benway also had 13 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Kelsi McNamara added 15 points and five steals.
 

Ainsley Burns had all six of her points in the opening quarter to help Colby take a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes. The two teams combined for just nine points in the second quarter, with the Monks taking a 23-21 lead at intermission.

The Mules only trailed 32-29 after Driscoll scored inside with 5:15 left in the third quarter. St. Joseph's used an 8-3 run over the next three minutes to take a 40-32 margin.
 

Trailing 48-40 in the fourth quarter, Colby scored five straight points to narrow the lead to 48-45 with 6:20 remaining. Benway answered with a basket to push the lead to 50-45, but Colby cut the lead to 50-47 on McCrum's jumper with 5:41 remaining. Unfortunately for the Mules, the points were the final of the game. The Monks scored the final eight points.

Colby will play at Kean University in New Jersey on Friday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m.
