Women's basketball drops California opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Colby College women's basketball team opened up a two-game California trip with a 60-44 setback to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.

By the numbers
* Ainsley Burns led the Mules (5-4 overall) with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Grace Coutu (pictured) finished with seven points and 11 rebounds. 
 
* Keagan Dunbar added eight points, three assists and was 2-for-5 from 3-point range. Sarah Hancock also had three assists and Jane MacKerron pulled down six rebounds.
 
* Maya Love and Kate Parrish both had 13 points for C-M-S (8-2 overall).
 
Game highlights
* The Athenas opened up a 12-3 lead in the first quarter, but the Mules fought back and only trailed 17-13 after 10 minutes.
 
* Colby got as close as a 27-25 deficit in the second quarter. However, C-M-S went on a 14-3 run to end the quarter for a 41-28 margin at intermission.
 
* The Athenas scored 24 points in the third quarter to pull away.

* The Mules finish up the California trip with a game at Pomona-Pitzer at 6 p.m. (EST) Sunday.
