Women's hockey gives battle to No. 10 Endicott, falls 4-3

BEVERLY, Mass. -- With two of their top three scorers back on the ice, the Colby College women's hockey team nearly pulled off an upset with a 4-3 setback to 10th-ranked Endicott College on Tuesday night.

Halley Fine had 36 saves and the Mules (0-7-2 overall) had 39 shots on goal. Colby will play Wesleyan University on Friday at 7 p.m. at Alfond Rink.

After falling behind 4-1 just 32 seconds into the second period, the Mules settled down and kept the Gulls scoreless for the final 39:28 of the contest.

Cassidy Holzer scored her third of the season at 11:36 of the second period from Kailey Buxbaum and Eleanor Knutzen.

The Mules cut the margin to one when Delaney Flynn scored from Brooke Gary (pictured) at 5:38 of the third period. Colby had an 18-13 margin in shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of play.

Vendela Jonsson stopped 17 of her 36 saves in the third period for Endicott (11-0-1), which had three goals in the opening period.

Jade Meier scored her sixth goal for the Gulls just 1:53 into the game, but Colby answered at 11:58 when Mikayla McLaughlin notched her third goal of the year from Katie McLaughlin and Bella Papapetros on the power play.

Papapetros and Sasha Fritts were both playing their first games of the season after studying abroad in the first semester. The two combined for nearly 40 points last year. Fritts had five shots on goal Tuesday.

Endicott took control with three unanswered goals from Meredith Vlachos, Lexi Klein, and Michaela McNamara. Klein also assisted on the goal by Vlachos at 16:56 of the opening period. Klein added her goal just 40 seconds later for a 3-1 margin after one period.

The Mules took a penalty with 51 seconds remaining in the first period and Endicott made them pay. Michaela McNamara scored on the power play just 32 seconds into the second period.
