Women's hockey falls 3-2 to Bantams

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's hockey team played to a 1-1 tie after two periods, but Trinity College scored twice in the third period to hang on for a 3-2 win in NESCAC play on Friday at Alfond Rink.

The Bantams are 3-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the NESCAC, while Colby falls to 0-14-3 overall and 0-10-1 in the league. The two teams play again Saturday at 3 p.m.

Trinity took a power play into the third period and made it count with a big goal. Sophomore forward Lindsay Miller won a scrum near the Bantam blue line and hit Tashsa Adams with a pass in front of the Mule blue line. Adams skated in and ripped a shot for the goal.

The Bantams scored their third goal just 24 seconds after a Colby power play ended. Trinity scored on a transition play, with Kelcie Finn coming up with the main assist after pushing the puck over to Hannah Oganeku on the left side for the score.

Colby, with a power play and an extra attacker, scored the final goal on a wild play. With eight seconds left and the face-off in Trinity's zone, Taylor Methven hit a shot toward the goal that goalie Jess Thulin saved and tried to cover up. The Mules battled hard on the play and Cassidy Holzer knocked the puck into the net.

The problem after the goal was the clock had not started on the face-off. The officials, after a dispute by Trinity, put five seconds on the clock for the center ice face-off. The Mules won the draw, but Anna Rudinski's long shot was wide left.

Both teams have struggled to score goals this year, but each had one goal in the opening 20 minutes. The Bantams scored first on a two-on-one with Kelcie Finn and Melissa Maffeo. Finn started the play with a steal near center ice and quickly got the puck to Maffeo in transition. Maffeo slid the pass back to Finn near the crease for the score.

Bella Papapetros scored her first of the season for Colby with just 1:17 left in the period. Kailey Buxbaum came across a loose puck near center ice, skated in over the blue line, and hit Papapetros with a pass on the right side. Her blast tied the game at 1-1.

With the Bantams up 3-1 in the third period, Colby's Katie McLaughlin had a wide open opportunity on the right side of the goal. Her shot hit the right post and Thulin dived on the puck.

Thulin, who was at Colby her first two years, made 35 saves. Halley Fine (pictured) stopped 32 shots for the Mules.
