Crusaders stop women's hockey

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After Colby College took an early 1-0 lead, Holy Cross responded with four unanswered goals to take control on the way to a 6-2 non-conference women's hockey victory Saturday at Alfond Rink.

The Crusaders improve to 10-2 overall, while Colby drops to 0-6-1.

The game started well for the Mules, taking a 1-0 lead just 2:44 into the contest. Kailey Buxbaum won a face-off and pushed the puck forward to Delaney Flynn, who immediately crossed the puck to Cassidy Holzer (pictured) for a one-timer and her second goal of the season.

Holy Cross answered at 5:05 of the first period when Hannah Gillis kept the puck in at the right point and pushed it up the boards to Kara Violette, who beat a defender and ripped a shot past goalie Halley Fine.

The key goal and a momentum changer may have come with just 31 seconds left in the first period by Sam Girard. The Crusaders won a face-off and Erin Hall ripped a shot from the left point. Elizabeth Scala redirected the puck to the left of the goal to Girard, who scored on a tough angle.

Holy Cross scored on a delayed penalty just 1:16 into the second period. Hall had another blast from the point that was saved by Fine, but the rebound went into a scrum of players and Maeve Reilly was able to get the puck in the back of the net. Julie Matthias also had an assist on the play.

The Crusaders went up 4-1 at 6:44 of the second period when Relly pushed a pass over to Jackie Gellner, who made a nice pass off the left boards to Scala. Right around the blue line, Scala skated in alone and lifted a puck over the blocker of Fine.

The Mules battled back in the third period to make it 4-2 at 7:06 of the third period. Carly Thomas did a nice job of battling for a puck on the right boards. Moira Mullaney came up with a loose puck and pushed it back to McKayla McLaughlin for a long blast from the right point.

The Crusaders scored two goals in a span of 1:01 to put the game way. The Mules were unable to clear a puck and Izzy Bagi's shot from the left point found the net.

The Mules again had problems getting the puck out of their zone and Holy Cross scored its sixth goal. Hannah Gillis had the long shot from straight on off assists from Violette and Bagi.

Alex Barnes improved to 3-0 on the season with 19 saves, while Fine made 24 saves for Colby.
