Women's hockey beats Southern Maine, wins first game

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Colby College women’s hockey team came out strong with two goals in the first period and won for the first time this season in a 3-1 non-conference victory over University of Southern Maine at Alfond Rink.

Katie McLaughlin had a dominating game with two goals and one assist on the three Colby goals. She used her speed to generate a number of scoring opportunities for the Mules (1-19-1 overall). McLaughlin has 25 career goals and 59 points.

Huskie goaltender Whitney Padgett kept the game close with 51 saves. She made a number of difficult stops as the Mules put on plenty of pressure in the USM zone.

Colby took the lead at 4:24 of the opening period on the goal of the night. Brooke Gary had a nice pass out of Colby’s zone to Bella Papapetros (pictured) just before center ice line. Papapetros found herself on a two-on-one and pushed a pass over to McLaughlin for a one-timer.

Izzy Tegtmeyer started the play out of Colby’s zone on the second score when she pushed a pass off the right wall to Papapetros, who ended up skating behind the Huskie goal. Papapetros turned away from a defender and went behind the goal again. With the two players battling for the puck, Papapetros managed to flick the puck to McLaughlin directly behind the net. McLaughlin kept coming around and used a wrap-around shot for the 2-0 lead at 10:43.

USM (6-16-1 overall) took advantage of a Colby turnover less than a minute after Mules’ goal to make it 2-1 after one period. Grace Simmons came up with the loose puck on the right boards and immediately ripped a pass in front to Katie Couture for a shorthanded goal at 11:38.

Colby’s final goal was similar to the Huskie score. USM turned the puck over further down in the right corner in the second period. McLaughlin came up with the puck, turned quickly, and found Eleanor Knutzen in front for the score.

Padgett and Colby goalie Halley Fine, who earned her first collegiate victory, both played well in the final period. Padgett made 19 saves and had 16 saves or more in all three periods. Fine made eight of her 21 saves in the final 20 minutes.
