Women's hockey closes out season with win behind seniors

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's hockey team exploded for four goals in the third period and closed out the season with a 6-1 victory over Becker College in non-conference play Saturday at Alfond Rink.

On Senior Day in the final home game, Colby had four seniors come up with five of the six goals. Katie McLaughlin had two goals to finish with 27 goals and 34 assists for 61 career points. Delaney Flynn, who had her 20th career goal, also scored with fellow seniors Eleanor Knutzen and Kailey Buxbaum.

Despite a huge shot advantage by Colby, Becker (8-15-2 overall) was able to stay in the game for 50 minutes.

Flynn scored the lone goal of the opening period on the power play. Anna Rudinski passed along the blue line to Brooke Gary, who ripped a shot that Flynn scored off the rebound in front.

The Mules were up 2-0 after two periods when Knutzen kept the puck in along the left boards and spun to get away from a defender. Her shot from a tough angle made it a two-goal game. Bella Papapetros was credited with an assist.

Gary scored the lone Colby goal not registered by a senior.  Papapetros flicked a pass to Knutzen, who got the puck back to Gary on the left point. Gary immediately went around two straight defenders and ripped a low shot for a 3-0 lead at 3:03 of the third period.

Becker stayed in the game when Michaela Martin deflected in a shot from Hannah Elmer at 7:34. Brittany Aiello had the secondary assist.

Colby scored three goals in a span of 3:58 to put the game away. Knutzen had her second assist of the night after she got the puck to Sasha Fritts at the left point. Fritts hammered a shot that was saved, but McLaughlin cleaned up the rebound at the right post for a 4-1 margin.

Buxbaum hammered in a rebound off a shot from Flynn at 15:07. Tess Dupre started the play and received an assist.

McLaughlin capped a fine career with the final goal with 2:18 to play. Flynn pushed a long pass to Papapetros, who skated in and found McLaughlin streaking in on the right side. McLaughlin took the pass and came in front of the goal for a 6-1 margin.

Senior goalie Hannah Insuik (pictured) started the game, Katie Fenton played the second period, and Halley Fine went the final 20 minutes for Colby (2-19-3). The three goalies combined for just eight saves.

Madison Rigsby started and made 10 saves before being relieved by Julia Johnson at 9:03 of the first period. Johnson went on to make 61 saves, including 48 stops in the final two periods.
