Women's tennis heads to California for start of spring season

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After going 4-0 in the short fall season, the Colby College women's tennis team opens the spring season Sunday in California for four matches.

Lydia Venditti and Gabriela Venditti did not look like first-year players a year ago. The twins stepped in at first doubles and the top two singles positions to lead the Mules to a 12-4 overall record, an 8-1 mark in home matches, and a 4-3 NESCAC record. The duo combined to go 13-8 in doubles, while both players went 9-5 in singles play.

Lydia Venditti played all the matches at first singles last year, but Gabriela Venditti played the number one position in the fall matches. Counting the two fall tournaments, Gabriela Venditti is 5-3 overall and Lydia Venditti is 5-2 this season.

Maddie Lupone, a junior co-captain with senior Annie Morris (pictured), went 8-6 last year while mainly playing third singles and is off to a 5-2 record after the fall season.

Jamie Pine had the best overall record last year in singles at 9-2 and is off to a 3-2 start his year at the fourth spot. First-year Emily Dyckman was 6-2 in singles play, Morris has won all three of her matches in the fall, Aleks Piibe had a 5-5 record last year in singles, and first-year Hania Lenderking had a 3-3 fall.

Lupone had a 6-4 record last year with Piibe while mostly playing at second doubles. Lupone went 5-1 with three different partners during the fall season and will open the spring season playing with Pine, who had 12 wins in doubles last year. Piibe and Dyckman will team up at third doubles.
