Athanasopoulos third in pentathlon, nearly breaks school record

BOSTON, Mass. -- Colby College's Jenna Athanasopoulos came two points shy of tying a 20-year-old school record after taking third place in the pentathlon at the Open New England Women's Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Michaela Garrett also placed third for the Mules, who are in fifth place with 12 points heading in Saturday's final day of competition. 
 

Athanasopoulos (pictured) had 3,336 points to come within two of the 1997 Colby record of 3,338 set by Cindy Pomerleau '97. Athanasopoulos was second in the 60 hurdles (9.20), fourth in the shot put (35-10.5), tied for fifth in the high jump (4-11.75), sixth in the 800 meters (2:32.50), and tied for sixth in the long jump (16-6.5).

Garrett had a throw of 55-9 in the weight throw. She has broken her own school record four times this year, the final time with throw of 59-8.5 in winning the New England Division III Championships.
 

Taylor Depalo qualified for Saturday's final in the 400 dash with a time of 57.90 in taking seventh. Maggie Giles was 19th in the 800 meters (2:21.31).
