Lawlor breaks old school record in 3,000 meters by 17 seconds

BOSTON, Mass. -- Colby College's Caitlin Lawlor broke a 27-year-old school record by more than 17 seconds after taking second place in the 3,000-meter run at the Open New England Women's Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday.

Lawlor had a time of 9 minutes, 47.73 seconds to break the old Colby record of 10:05.24 set by Jill Vollweiler '90. Lawlor was one of only three runners to finish below 10 minutes.
 

Hannah Springhorn (pictured), a sophomore, took third place for the Mules in the mile (4:55.49). She finished behind two seniors. 

Taylor Depalo was sixth for Colby in the 400 dash (57.91), while Sophie Stokes Cerkvenik took 20th place in the 60 hurdles (9.20).
 

Colby's 1,600 relay team of Rachel Leonard, Stokes Cerkvenik, Michaela Athanasopoulos, and Taylor Depalo took fifth place in 3:53.63, while the 3,200 relay of Brit Biddle, Mahal Alvarez-Backus, Maggie Giles, and Lydia Fanning finished sixth in 9:24.00.

Colby finished in 10th place with 36 points in a field of 35 scoring teams.
