Volleyball defeats Gordon to earn split on the day

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Alexa Busser and Karolina Serhan both had 11 kills to lead the Colby College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Gordon College in non-conference play at Tufts University.

In the other match, the Mules gave league leader Tufts a battle in a 3-1 loss in NESCAC play. Colby won 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 against Gordon.
"Our team really came to play this weekend," Colby head coach Candice Parent said. "With Erin Maidman out due to an injury, Kate Wincek stepped into the role and really did an outstanding job. Our seniors also stepped up their play this weekend, with Alexa and Karolina having amazing days."

Serhan (pictured) hit .444, added four blocks, and two service aces. Busser hit .429, while teammates Paige Hanssen and Elizabeth Noyes both had seven kills. Isa Berzansky finished with five kills and Kate Wincek had 19 digs.

Colby's Mae Sefransky nearly tied a school record with nine of Colby's 15 aces. The record for a match of four sets is 10, set by Kendall Kirby in 2005.

With the score tied at 22 in the first set, Berzansky had a kill and then a block to put the Mules up 24-22. Busser closed out the set with a kill after Gordon had cut the margin to 24-23.

The Mules (5-17) were up 23-22 in the second set and received kills from Berzansky and Serhan for the final two points.

The fourth set against Gordon was too close for comfort for the Mules. Colby led 24-16 before Gordon ran off seven straight points to cut the margin to one. Serhan closed out the match with a kill off a set from Emily Moslener.

After falling 25-14 in the opening set against Tufts, Colby fought hard for a 25-23 victory in the second set. The Jumbos (17-1 overall, 9-0 NESCAC) took the last two sets by 25-9 and 25-15 scores.

Serhan had nine kills and hit .238 for the Mules. Hanssen added seven kills and a team-best 13 digs, while Noyes had five kills and 10 digs. Busser had a pair of blocks to go with four kills, Sefransky had four aces, and Moslener had eight assists and three aces.

Brigid Bell, Mackenzie Bright, and Katie Kim all had 10 kills for the Jumbos. Angela Yu dished 36 assists for the winners.
