Volleyball drops league match to Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Colby College volleyball team had chances for victory in the first and second sets, but Connecticut College pulled away each time in the closing points in a 3-0 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night.


Colby (0-6 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) plays two non-conference matches Saturday in Nashua, N.H. The Mules meet Regis at 1 p.m. in a neutral site match and then play host Rivier at 3 p.m.
The Mules' best chance for a win was in the middle set, but Colby battled back to make the first set a challenge for the Camels (4-1, 1-0 NESCAC). Conn College led 19-13 at one point only to see the Mules cut the margin to 22-20. The 20th point was originally awarded to the Camels, but the two officials met and changed the call. Colby got as close as 23-21 after a Camel service error, but Conn College won the next two points on a kill and a service ace.
Colby stayed in the second set early and turned an 8-8 tie into a 14-10 lead. The Camels tied the set at 16-16 and went ahead at 18-17. The Mules took a 21-20 lead, but Conn College won five of the next seven points for a 25-23 win. 
The Camels took command early in the third set with a 7-2 lead. Colby got as close as 17-12 before Conn College pulled away for a 25-15 win.
Elizabeth Noyes had a match-high 14 defensive digs and added five kills for Colby. Paige Hanssen finished with a team-high seven kills and seven digs, while Karolina Serhan had 12 digs and four kills. Molly Manuel and Emily Moslener each had eight assists.
Jenny Kellogg led the Camels with 10 kills, nine digs, and three aces.
