Volleyball starts strong in losses at MIT tourney

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Colby College volleyball team won the first set in each match Friday, but fell 3-1 to both Roger Williams University and University of Redlands on the opening day of the MIT Invitational.
The Mules (0-2 overall) face Babson College at 11 a.m. Saturday and close out the tourney with a 1 p.m. match with Wellesley College.
In the Roger Williams match, Paige Hanssen finished with 12 kills, nine defensive digs, and three blocks for the Mules. Karolina Serhan added 11 kills and two blocks, while Alexa Busser added eight kills and two blocks. First-year Nicole Petherbridge had six kills and a team-high four blocks. Erin Maidman led the way in defensive digs with 14. Setters Molly Manuel (15 assists) and Emily Moslener (14 assists) combined for 29 assists.
Hanssen also led the way against Redlands with 16 kills and nine digs. Serhan added 13 kills and three aces, Petherbridge had nine kills and three blocks, and Elizabeth Noyes had seven kills. Moslener dished 25 assists, Mae Sefranksy had nine assists, and Erin Maidman paced the Mules with 14 digs.
