Gorman named National Athlete of the Week by USTFCCCA

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After winning the individual title at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships, Colby College's Sophia Gorman (Charlotte, Vt.) was named National Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association on Monday.

Gorman led from start to finish and won by nearly 14 seconds with a time of 21 minutes, 54.8 seconds. She is one of three Colby women to win the individual title, the last coming in 1996.

A Colby sophomore, Gorman has been racing well all fall. She placed fifth at the Connecticut College Invitational two weeks ago, one of the biggest regular season meets and a field with plenty of NESCAC runners.

This is the first time the Colby women's program has been honored with a National Athlete of the Week honor. David Chelimo earned the honor for the men's team in 2014.

Gorman's next big race is Saturday, Nov. 10., at the New England Division III Championships/NCAA Qualifier at Bowdoin College.
