Chahine wins slalom in FIS Open race at Sunday River

NEWRY, Maine -- Colby College first-year alpine skier Julia Chahine is already off to a terrific start to the season even before the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) begins in January.

Chahine (pictured) won the women's slalom at the FIS Open at Sunday River with a two-run total time of 1:30.98 (44.60, 46.38). She went from starting the weekend with bib 25 to securing a big victory Sunday.
"Julia has been skiing so well this month," Colby head coach Danny Noyes said. "She's found a new speed and has been working so hard to get on the front of her ski. It was a great day for Julia."
Chahine was racing against skiers from Middlebury College, Williams College, Bates College, University of New Hampshire, Saint Michael's College, St. Lawrence University, Boston College, and Plymouth State.
Rosie Hust took 13th place in the slalom and Lily Hogan finished 21st.
In women's slalom skiing Saturday, Sandra Schoepke took third place with runs of 48.23 and 49.57 for a 1:37.80 total. Hust was right behind her in fourth place with a 1:37.86, while Hogan took 22nd.
In men's slalom skiing Saturday, Matt Wilson took fourth place with runs of 46.23 and 45.24 for a 1:31.47 finish. Colbey Derwin took eighth place in 1:32.15 and Michael Ferri was 12th in 1:32.62.
Jack Auty placed 10th in the slalom for Colby with a 1:25.95 on Friday. Derwin was 13th in 1:26.24.
