Derwin has second-fastest second run in slalom at Easterns

NEWRY, Maine -- Colby College men's alpine skier Colbey Derwin had the second-fastest second run of the day at the Eastern Championships as part of the Bates Carnival at Sunday River on Saturday.
Derwin was in 26th place after his opening run of 1:00.17, but then improved all the way to 15th place after going 54.28 on his second trip. He finished with a two-run total time of 1:54.45.
The Colby men finished fifth overall with some balanced finishes. Matt Wilson took 16th place in 1:54.61 on runs of 58.73 and 55.88. Paul Ferri placed 19th in 1:55.06 (59.63, 55.43) and Chauncey Morgan was 27th in 1:58.58 (1:01.20, 57.38).
The Colby women were hurt after leading skier Sandy Schoepke had trouble on her second run. Schoepke was in seventh place after the opening run.
Rosie Hust took 23rd for the Mules in 1:58.63 (59.68, 58.95), Lily Hogan finished 24th in 1:59.23  (1:00.59, 58.64), and Tess Baldwin took 34th in 2:06.97 (1:03.67, 1:03.30).
The women's team finished seventh overall.
