Winkin to be honored by NEIBA

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) will have its inaugural 2017 Hall of Fame class and Colby College legend John Winkin will be one of eight inductees.

The class will be honored prior to the 43rd Annual NEIBA Joe Walsh All-Star Game on Friday, June 2, in Pawtucket, R.I. The university all-stars (Division I) and college all-stars (Division II/III) will play at McCoy Stadium at noon. Winkin will be honored posthumously. 
 

A member of 11 Halls of Fame, Winkin began his coaching career at Colby in 1954 and was named the 1965 National Coach of the Year. He compiled a record of 301-202-5 in 20 years with the Mules. Winkin also served as athletic director during his time at Colby.

Winkin moved on to the University of Maine in 1975, where his teams went 642-430-3 over 22 seasons and made six trips to the College World Series.
 

Winkin took over as head coach at Husson University in 2003. His career coaching record at Colby, UMaine, and Husson was 1,043-706-16. Winkin was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Other inductees include: Archie Allen, John Connelly, Andy Baylock, Dick Bergquist, Jack Butterfield, Jim Stone, and Joe Zavattaro.
