Baseball falls in two one-run games

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Colby College baseball team held Plymouth State to just five total runs in two games, but the Panthers made them count in 4-3 and 1-0 victories in non-league play Friday.

The Mules (3-7 overall) received some terrific pitching performances, but Colby managed just five hits against two complete games by Plymouth State pitchers.

Colby had two leads in the first game. Keenan Iuliano reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single by Ryan Quinn to give the Mules a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

After a home run by Plymouth State's Nate Frederick in the bottom of the second, the Mules went up 2-1 with a single run in the fourth. Matt Garcia got on first by an error, moved to second on a walk to Andrew Della Volpe, and took third when Iuliano's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base. Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Treveloni.

The Panthers took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Plymouth State used three hits, two errors, two walks, a hit batter, and two stolen bases to score the three runs.

The Mules nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Quinn reached on an error to start the inning and took second when Grant Lowensohn was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice put runners on first and third, Arsenault hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Quinn with the final run.

Plymouth State's Geoff Kayo allowed no earned runs in a complete game one-hit shutout, struck out six, and walked two. Taimu Ito pitched 2.2 innings for the Mules and gave up three hits and struck out four.

Bobby Forese (pictured) took the tough-luck loss in the second game for Colby. He went six innings, allowed no earned runs, struck out six, and walked none. Emery Dinsmore pitched the seventh for the Mules.

Arsenault had the lone hit of the game for Colby off of Dylan Gaita. He singled on a hard ground ball up the middle in the first inning.

James Salta reached on a one-out error in the third inning for the Panthers. He moved to second on a ground out and then scored the only run of the game on single to center field by Ryan Richard.

Quinn was the only other Colby player to reach base, getting on by error with two outs in the second inning.
