LEWISTON, Maine — Will Cohen had a long relief stint to earn the victory, Tommy Forese scored four runs, and Soren Hanson drove in four to lift the Colby College baseball team to an 11-6 win over Bates College on Friday at Leahey Field.
The Mules improve to 11-18 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC East play. Colby will look to finish .500 in the league with two more games against Bates on Saturday at noon on Coombs Field.
Cohen (2-2) entered the game with one out in the fourth inning and went the rest of the way. He allowed four hits over 5.2 innings, struck out two, walked one, and gave up just one earned run.
Forese led off and got on base by being hit by a pitch, a single, a walk, and by a Bates error. Meanwhile, Hanson had two hits, walked once, and drove in four runs.
Zach Ellenthal, Colby’s leading hitter, added three hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Matt Garcia had two hits and drove in two runs, while Chris Sonberg had two hits and scored twice. Tyler Starks scored twice and had one hit and an RBI for Colby.
The Mules had a lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Garcia to score Forese. Colby added two more runs in the second when Hanson’s two-out single through the left side brought in Forese and Sonberg.
Bates came up with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game, but Colby answered with three in the top of the fourth. Sonberg led off with a single, Starks walked, and Forese walked to load the bases. Ellenthal got an RBI when he was hit by a pitch. Hanson and Garcia both had a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Bobcats cut the lead to 6-4 with a lone run in the fourth inning. Colby added two in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and one in the eighth.
Forese led off with a single, moved to second on an error by the pitcher, and took third on Ellenthal’s bunt single. Hanson’s single to center field brought in Forese. With the bases loaded, Ellenthal scored on a fielder’s choice.
In the seventh, Andrew Della Volpe led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Starks singled to right field to bring in Della Volpe. Ellenthal later doubled to score Starks.
Colby loaded the bases in the eighth inning and got its final run on Della Volpe’s ground out to score Garcia.
Brendan Fox, Samuel Warren, and Evan Czopek all had two hits for Bates (10-18, 2-7 NESCAC East). Connor Colombo worked the first three innings in taking the loss.
