Waterville, Maine - The #18 Colby College Field Hockey team defeated Husson University by a score of 2-1 Thursday night. The win closes out the Mules' non-conference schedule with a perfect 5-0 mark, undefeated for the third year in a row. Over those five games, Colby has outscored its opponents 18-4.
Despite Colby bringing energy and eyeing an early lead, it was actually the Eagles who scored right off the bat. Allysah Green scored her fourth goal of the season at 2:30 and put a charge into her team. Georgia Cassidy led her team down the field and answered back just under four minutes into play. Nifty stick work led her to her backhand and the shot was deflected by the defender and bounded past goal keeper Kimmie Goddard.
Goddard ranks fifth in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) in saves and save percentage, and she added to those totals tonight. Over the next two quarters Goddard stopped shot after shot, including a late attempt by Cassidy. Georgia beat a defender off the foot and shot a bullet above eye level of Goddard, but the goalie deflected the ball off her stick-side pad and over the net. The Mules pressured all night, leading in shots 12-5 and penalty corners 7-5.
Colby finally broke through halfway through the final quarter. On Cassidy's fifth shot of the game it appeared that Goddard was once again going to deny the Mules. This time she let up a trickling rebound right in front of her feet and Eliza Mell (photo inset) punched it into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
Colby plays its final game of the regular season on Tuesday when they host #16 Bates College at 3:00pm.
