Mules edge Roadrunners in Overtime thriller to come away with a 103-97 victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a neutral site game, the Colby College Men's basketball team started their Season off against the Ramapo College Roadrunners and came away with a thrilling 103-97 victory in overtime.

Colby and Ramapo both came out in mid-season form but Colby was able to edge the Roadrunners in overtime. The Mules and Roadrunners each had 5 players score in double figures with Alex Dorion dropping 23 points to lead all Colby scorers. Ramapo Guard, Rob McWilliams, led all scorers with 25 points.

Ramapo started things off with a Jordan Zagadou layup to give Ramapo a 2-0 lead. Sam Jefferson of Colby scored the first points of the season for the Mules with a 3 point shot. The back and forth battle would continue with multiple players scoring for each side. Rob McWilliams of Ramapo hit a jumper with 15:33 left in the half to give the Roadrunners their largest lead of the game at 14-8. After a pair of free throws and a jump shot by Jason Battle, that lead would grow to 18-12 with 13:48 remaining. The Mules would claw their way back into with Wallace Tucker and Alex Dorion contributing to the comeback. With a layup by Alex Dorion with 10:28, Colby would bring the game back to a 21-21 tie. The lead changes would continue until the Mules take only their second lead of the game with 4:28 left when Noah Tyson hit a 3 point jump shot to give the Mules a 32-30 edge. Colby would hold onto their lead going into half time as Dean Weiner would hit a pair of free throws to close it out to put the Mules up 43-35 going into halftime.

The Colby Mules would come out in the second half the same way they finished the first half, hitting buckets. Noah Tyson would hit a layup with 18:40 left in the half to give the Mules their largest lead of the game at 10 points. Just as the Mules started to take control of the game, Ramapo would use a pair of jump shots by Rob McWilliams to get right back into it. With 15:14 left, McWilliams would bring the Roadrunners to within six. After a big defensive rebound by Ramapo's Andrew Morgan and a couple clutch shots by Connor Romano, the Roadrunners would cut the lead to four with 7:20 to go. The Mules would come right back as Noah Tyson hits a big time 3 point shot at the 6:28 mark. After a Jason Battle layup and free throw with 3:06 left, The Roadrunners were able to cut their deficit to only 2 points. Alex Dorion would do what had done all game long and added to his point total as he hit a 3 point shot with 2:23 left. A foul by Dorion would give Matt latka of the Roadrunners two free throws to get back to within 2 with 1:33 left. A Travis Bennet layup with 00:21 remaining would give Ramapo their first lead of the second half at 87-85. Sam Jefferson of the Mules would come right back and hit a layup of his own at the other end to make it a tie game and bring the game into overtime.

Colby would take the lead right out of the gate and never look back after Matt Hanna hit a layup to start off overtime. The back and forth thriller would continue but with 00:18 to go, Tyson Noah would hit some big time free throws for the Mules to close out the Roadrunners and take a 103-97 non-conference victory.

Colby had multiple players pitch in to help the Mules come away with the win. Noah Tyson and Sam Jefferson each had 17, Matt Hanna would pitch in 16, while Wallace Tucker played a big role and dropped 15 points for the Mules. As a team, the Mules shot 48.6%, hitting 34-70 field goals.

The Mules will take on Anna Maria College today at 2:00pm at Connecticut College in another non-conference game.
