Colby brings record to 6-0 with 81-67 win at New Jersey City

Jersey City, New Jersey – The Colby College Men's Basketball team stays undefeateed with the 81-67 victory over the New Jersey City Gothic Knights.

Colby traveled to Jersey City after having a week off and were able to take the lead right off the bat with a Matt Hanna (headline photo) three point field goal 20 seconds into the game. After trading buckets and leads over the next few minutes, Hanna and Noah Tyson  (photo insert) were able to hit back to back threes to give the Mules a 12-6 edge with 15:24 to go. Denzel Banks of New Jersey City would hit a jumper and a pair of free throws to help the Gothic Knights cut the Mules lead to 16-13 with 13:03 to play. With 6:00 left on the clock, Hanna and Banks would again hit jumpers 18 seconds apart to bring the score to 29-18, Colby. Colby would close out the half with a 40-28 lead as Sam Jefferson and Wallace Tucker each did their part to help extend the Mules lead. Hanna and Banks had the hot hands in the first half each scoring in double figures with 16 points apiece.

A layup from New Jersey City's, Sam Toney, helped the Gothic Knights close the gap on the Mules lead to start the half. As they have done all year, the Mules used the three point shot to keep the Gothic Knights at bay. Tyson, Tucker, and Jefferson all hit from deep to give the Mules a 51-34 lead with 16:00 to go. A 10 to 3 run by New Jersey City would cut their deficit to 10 with 13:01 to play. The Mules would use their own 7-2 run to extend their lead to 68-55 with 7:02 left. New Jersey City would do their best to stay in the game when Kayton Darley and Toney each hit shots with 3:46 to play but Colby was able to pull away in the end. Jefferson would hit a pair of jumpers and free throws to close them out giving the Mules an 81-67 victory.

Matt Hanna led all scorers in the game with 26 points. Noah Tyson had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior, Sam Jefferson, also scored in double figures, pitching in 20 points. Jefferson is currently leading the NESCAC in points per game with 26.0 and is third in Field Goal percentage (69.1%) and 3 point percentage (62.9%). Alex Dorion sits at fifth in the NESCAC in 3 point percentage at 58.1%.

Colby next plays Sunday, December 1, against Kean at 1:00 PM.
