Men's hockey earns sixth seed, to play at Amherst in league playoffs

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team earned the sixth seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs and will play at third-seeded Amherst College on Saturday in a league quarterfinal game at 6 p.m.

The Mules finished 9-7-2 in league play, while the Mammoths were 8-5-5. Colby had mixed results against Amherst, winning 4-1 at home and falling 5-1 in the road game. 
 
In Saturday's regular season finale, Sean Lawrence earned his third shutout of the season as the Colby College men's hockey team ended the regular season with a 3-0 win over Tufts University in NESCAC men's hockey.
 
The Mules will head into the league playoffs at 12-10-2 overall.
 
Game highlights
* The Mules scored a pair of goals 88 seconds apart in the first period to take a lead they would not relinquish. On a two-on-one play, senior tri-captain Phil Klitirinos dished to junior Nick O'Connor who had a wide-open net in which to deposit his 11th goal of the year at 14:40. J.P. Schuhlen had the secondary assist.
 
* With under four minutes remaining in the first period, junior Thomas Stahlhuth netted his second goal of the season and the Mules quickly led 2-0. Billy Overby and Kienan Scott had assists on the play.

* With Tufts having celebrated Senior Day to begin the game, Colby took the air out of Valley Forum with their third goal in the middle of the last period. Klitirinos again set up a teammate with a wide-open net, with senior Mario Benicky scoring at 9:09 for a 3-0 margin. Klitirinos has a team-high 16 assists.
 
By the numbers
*  The Mules remained unbeaten in their last four games (2-0-2) and improved to 5-2-2 since January 20.
 
* Lawrence had 15 of his 30 saves in the first period. 
 
* Both teams played aggressively on defense, challenging shots all game. Colby finished with 21 blocks, including five by senior Michael Decker, who had an assist on the final goal. 
 
* O'Connor won 15 of his 24 face-offs to lead the visitors.
