NESCAC champion men's hockey will play at UNE in NCAA first round

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College, the New England Small College Athletic Conference champions, will have a familiar opponent in the NCAA Division III Tournament when the Mules head to University of New England for a first round men's hockey game Saturday at 7 p.m.

Ticket and webcast information will be released Tuesday. The winner of Saturday's game will meet the Geneseo/Hobart winner in a quarterfinal game on March 17.
Colby, fresh off a 4-1 win over Trinity in the NESCAC title game Sunday, has developed a terrific Maine rivalry with the Nor'easters from Biddeford.
"UNE is a very good team that we know well," Colby head coach Blaise MacDonald said. "It will be about execution on game night. When you get to this point of the year in the national tournament, all teams are talented and playing their best hockey.
Colby (15-10-2 overall) is on a 5-0-2 unbeaten streak and allowed just eight goals in those seven games. However, the Mules dropped a 5-3 game at UNE on January 2 and then fell 5-1 to the Nor'easters on January 16 at Alfond Rink. The two losses were when the Mules were struggling, a time when Colby lost six of seven games.
The budding rivalry between Colby and UNE heads to the national stage Saturday.
"We are very excited to be a part of NCAA tournament hockey in Maine," MacDonald said. "This is great for the state and our Colby community."
