Defending champs fall at Amherst this time

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Colby College men's hockey team started a playoff run last year in a quarterfinal win over Amherst College, but the Mammoths were ready for the Mules this season.

Amherst scored four goals in the first period on the way to a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Colby in a NESCAC quarterfinal game Saturday. The Mules, who finish the season at 10-10-5, won the NESCAC title a year ago and started the trek with a victory at Amherst.
 
By the numbers
* Colby goalie Andrew Tucci had 26 saves, while Amherst keeper Michael Cullen stopped 16 shots.
 
* The two teams combined for 15 penalties and more than 40 minutes of penalty time.
 
* Amherst, the third seed, scored two power play goals in the first period and added a short-handed goal in the second period.
 
* The Mammoths scored at 2:35, 5:47, 11:21, and 12:31 in the first period.
