WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team totalled 63 shots and beat Southern New Hampshire University 2-1.
Both teams had stellar performances in goal, as Andy Beran (headline photo) started his first collegiate game and tallied 34 saves. On the other side of the ice, Kurt Gutting finished with 61 saves.
Neither team was able to score in the first period. The back and forth action went into the first intermission with Colby leading in shots 18-11.
After a period to feel out the competition, the Mules struck first in the second frame with a goal coming from Micheal Morrisey at 6:05. Morrisey rebounded a Justin Grillo attempt and took the lead for Colby. Determined to tie the game, the Penmen kept their shots going and the hard work in front of the goal gave them the tie. Cole Stewart sent a shot past the shoulder of Beran at 12:58.
With the third period underway both teams showed their toughness by battling down the ice. The Mules kept knocking at the door but time after time Gutting stood strong. Captain Brendan Murphy (photo inset) was able to take the Colby lead at 16:29. Cycling the puck around and in front of the net, Murphy found a loose rebound and sent it in to take the win 2-1.
The Mules move on to face UMass Boston on Saturday at Alfond Rink as part of the Colby-Bowdoin Classic. Start time is 4:00pm.
