LEWISTON, Maine – Colby men's lacrosse traveled to Maine rival Bates College for its last regular season game on Wednesday. Though secure with a postseason berth, the Mules' position in the NESCAC playoff seeding remained unclear heading into play.
Both teams jostled for an advantage early, but 14th ranked Bates took the game's first lead on Jack Scribner's goal just under four minutes into play. The Bobcats scored the next two, taking a 3-0 lead, before Colton Michel found the back of the net to get Colby on the board. Two more goals by Bates increased the Bobcats' lead to four late in the first quarter, but quick goals by Colby attack CJ Hassan and Lane Kadish cut back into their advantage. Though Bates scored again with two minutes remaining in the quarter, Riley Bergstrom and Colton Michel brought the Mules to within one when they buried shots in the final minute of the frame.
Both defenses reorganized in the second quarter and, aided by strong play from their goalies, held the opposing offenses to two goals apiece. Charlie Lynch scored his first goal of the game for Colby off of a feed from Bergstrom before Bergstrom followed his assist with his second goal, bringing the Mules back to within one. Colby Goalie C.J. Layton finished the quarter with three saves and a ground ball, keeping the score 8-7 Bates at halftime.
The Bobcats kept the pressure on in the third quarter, scoring twice in forty seconds to take a 10-7 lead. Colton Michel scored Colby's lone goal of the quarter, securing a hat trick, but another Bates goal kept their lead at three going into the fourth.
The Bobcats appeared to put the game away when they scored three more unanswered goals, increasing their lead to 14-8, but the Mules continued to press. Lane Kadish scored twice, once assisted by Hassan, to bring the Mules to within four. With 3:29, remaining, Jack Rickards finished on a feed from Michel, and then Bergstrom added his third of the game to cut the Bobcats' lead to two. Colby's comeback fell just short, however, and the Mules lost 14-12. C.J. Layton finished the game with 12 saves and Will Dodge led the team with two caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Colby finishes the regular season at 8-6 and secures the 6th seed in the NESCAC playoffs. The team next travel to Williams on Saturday, where they face 8th ranked Ephs in the NESCAC quarterfinals at 1:00 PM (EST).
