Relay team sets new school record, takes fourth at NESCAC meet

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Colby College men's 800-yard freestyle relay team tied the school record last year, but this year's foursome made sure they would hold the record by themselves on the first day of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Thursday's lone event was the 800 freestyle relay before competition begins Friday morning with preliminary races.

The Colby team of John Connors, Carter Garfield, Ryan Bedell, and Xander Geiersbach finished in a time of 6 minutes, 47.80 seconds to take fourth place overall. The relay team earned 52 points and have the Mules off to a good start in the championship meet.

"What a great start to the meet for the men. All eight men on the two relays posted lifetime bests," Colby head coach Tom Burton said. "The fourth-place finish for our 'A' relay is the highest finish of a Colby men’s relay since the start of the NESCAC Championship meet in 2001."

Garfield, Bedell, and Geiersbach teamed with Hugh Jacobsen '18 to tie the school record last year in 6:56.26. The four tied a relay team from 1998.

The Colby 'B' relay team also did well, posting the seventh-fastest time in school history and taking sixth among the 'B' teams. The team of Zachary Bergman, Jack Macphee, Darrel Choi, and Wyatt Fritz had a time of 7:01.96.

The two relays have Colby in fifth place overall, just two points out of fourth place.
