Men's tennis ready for opener

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College senior men's tennis players Vlad Murad and Carl Reid started the fall season off with an 8-1 record in doubles and a ranking of seventh in the Northeast Region.

Head coach Jason Cohen and the Mules hope that success continues when the spring season opens Saturday. Colby, ranked 14th in the Northeast Region, plays at 13th-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a key early match. Colby will stay at TCNJ and take on Goucher College at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Mules finish the trip with a noon match at New York University on Sunday.

Colby went 2-0 during the fall season and competed in three tournaments. The Mules have 16 matches on the schedule, including a spring break trip for six matches to California.

Murad and Reid won the Wallach Invitational at Bates for the third time during the fall season. Murad also went 7-2 in singles play, while two-time All-American Reid was 3-3.

Reid will be a co-captain with senior Cam Hillier, who had injury problems last year. He competed in five singles matches and was 3-2 in doubles play with Shaw Speer.

Colby first-years Scott Altmeyer (pictured) and Zale Shah made an immediate impact. Altmeyer was 3-1 in singles and teamed with Shah to go 3-3 in doubles play. Shah was 2-1 in singles play. In a match against Babson, Altmeyer played at the third spot and Shah was at four.

Speer played the sixth position against Babson and was 4-1 overall in singles play. Fellow juniors Jeremy Mendoza and Matt Martin also return for Colby. Mendoza was 4-2 in doubles play with first-year Luis Gonzalez Kompalic in the fall season.

Sophomores Nam Le and Sam Hoenig will provide the Mules with fine depth along with first-years Jonathan Hallal and Jimmy McGuire.
