Murad earns Elite 90, National Most Improved Senior awards

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Men's tennis player Vlad Murad (Bacau, Romania) became the first Colby College student-athlete to earn the Elite 90 Award from the NCAA for academic achievement.

Murad, who is at the NCAA Division III Individual Championships, has the highest cumulative grade point average of all the men's tennis players competing at nationals Thursday to Saturday. He was given the award at Wednesday night's banquet before the opening day of play.

Murad, a math and computer science double major, walked away with two awards Wednesday. He also was honored with the National Most Improved Senior Award, given out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Murad had already earned the Most Improved Senior Award for the Northeast Region.

The NCAA started the Elite 90 honor for the 2009-10 academic year for the student-athlete with the highest grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships. Murad is just the 15th NESCAC athlete to earn the award.
