EWING, N.J. -- Carl Reid saved four match points in the second set and went on to a victory at first singles to help Colby College to a key 6-3 win over #39 The College of New Jersey in the men's tennis spring opener Saturday.
"This was an excellent way to start our season with two wins in a long day," Colby head coach Jason Cohen said. "We've been working on being mentally tougher and I felt that we showed that against TCNJ, winning a lot of close sets needed to win the match."
Murad won at the second singles spot while giving up just three games. Scott Altmeyer, and Shaw Speer (pictured) also had singles victories in tight matches. Altmeyer and Zale Shah had Colby's other point against TCNJ at third doubles.
Speer and Hillier won 8-7 (2) at second doubles, while Reid and Murad won 8-2 at the first spot. Luis Gonzalez and Mendoza took the victory at third doubles.
"While it is a great start, we still have to recover and refocus for a tough NYU team who is playing well right now," Cohen said.
