LEWISTON, Maine -- Colby College's Scott Altmeyer ended the fall season on a high note by beating two New England Small College Athletic Conference rivals in winning the 'A' Flight at the Wallach Invitational at Bates College on Sunday.
"Scott played amazing all weekend and this was a great way to cap off a fantastic fall season for him. He was tough, fearless, and he adjusted so well between playing indoors one match and outdoors the next," Colby head coach Adam Reeb said. "It was great to have the whole team cheering for him as well, so was just great energy, a lot of fun, and a great way to end the fall season for the guys."
Altmeyer fought hard for a 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) victory over Amherst College's Kevin Ma in the championship match. Ma finished last year ranked 47th in the country.
"I was very nervous, but not worried heading into the third set tiebreak," Altmeyer said. "Because I won the first set, I knew if I played quality tennis I had a good chance to come away with the win."
Altmeyer made the final with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Bowdoin College's Justin Wang in a semifinal. Wang took a straight set victory on Saturday against Amherst's Sean Wei, who finished ninth in the country a year ago.
"This weekend my serve was crucial in helping me win quick points at important times in the match," Altmeyer said. "I felt like my backhand was a real weapon this weekend, especially when things got tight."
After a terrific fall season, Altmeyer will head into the spring season with high expectations.
"This weekend was a major confidence boost for both me and the team. As a group we showed we could be competitive with some of the strongest teams in the conference and country," Altmeyer said. "I was pleased with my ability to close out matches against top players, and I want to build on this during the spring."
