LEWISTON, Maine – Colby men's tennis sent eight players to the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates College. The event comprised many of the region's top teams, including Bates, Tufts, Brandeis, and Bowdoin, and consisted of four singles flights and two doubles flights. Colby's #1 singles player Scott Altmeyer won the A Singles Flight to take the biggest title of the weekend.
Altmeyer (pictured) rolled past Rishab Sharda of Tufts 6-1, 6-3 in the first round before overcoming Bates first-year Leo Kupferman in a closely contested quarterfinal, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. Building on his momentum from the second set and tie-breaker, Altmeyer stormed into the semifinals, cruising past Bowdoin's Oscar Yang, 6-0, 6-3. The win set up a final with Tufts sophomore Isaac Gorelik, who had forged a similar path of destruction en route to the championship. Altmeyer continued to roll, however. Although both players struggled to break the other's serve in the first set, Altmeyer ultimately did and came out on top 7-5 before securing the title with a 6-3 second set win. Jan Wenger also competed in the A Singles Flight for Colby, falling in a close match to Bowdoin's Evan Fortier, 6-4, 7-6(5). Fortier reached the semi-finals.
Colby sophomore Max Schuermann and senior Jonathan Hallal played in the B Singles Flight. Schuermann advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Harris Pentousis from Tufts, 6-4, 6-2, before falling by the same score to Justin Wang of Bowdoin. Hallal lost 6-3, 6-1 to R.P.I.'s Abraham Yohannes in the first round. In the C Singles flight, senior Luis Gonzalez Kompalic and first-year Ben Powis both fell in the first round. Gonzalez Kompalic was defeated by Skidmore's Brendan Jimenez (6-2, 6-3), while Powis lost to Colt Tegtmeirer of Brandeis in a tight match, 6-4, 6-7(8), 10-3. In the D Singles, first year Gerard Lopez put together a short run, advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating Niko Ramirez of Brandeis, 6-2, 6-4. Lopez fell 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to Skidmore's Serglu Celebidachi. Josh Fleishman lost 6-3, 6-1 to Matt Cashin of Tufts.
No Colby doubles pairs advanced past the first round. In the A flight, both Altmeyer/Wenger and Schuermann/Powis lost close matches to teams from Tufts. In the B flight, Hallal/Kompalic and Lopez/Fleishman both fell at the hands of Bowdoin pairs.
The match concludes the Mules' fall competition schedule. Colby will begin again next spring with an opening match in Cambridge against MIT on March 7th.
